EXO Tactik Ocellus initiative - propelling cities into the future

Complex mission specialist

EXO Tactik is a drone operator that specializes in public safety and municipal services. They carried out several pilot projects with cities in Quebec and actively contribute to the use of dronautics within municipalities. Its mission is to help public administrations with technological tools that will enable them to securely provide high-quality service to residents.

In addition to carrying out operations in complex environments, such as international airports, penitentiaries, and numerous urban environments, EXO Tactik participates in various structuring industrial committees, such as Transport Canada groups on aviation regulations and the social acceptability of drones, and NAV CANADA groups on air traffic control.

Dronautics at the heart of community life

The Ocellus initiative is a technological program which showcased the benefits of a shared drone operation service in real situations to serve a group of 10 municipalities and their departments.

Carried out in collaboration with IVÉO, a non-profit organization which helps small and medium-sized cities in the deployment of innovative solutions on their territory, the Ocellus initiative was able to bring together ten cities wishing to experiment with the use of drones to support their daily activities.

The project demonstrated that the use of drones combined with different integrated technologies can help reduce travel time for municipal agents, optimize certain activities and generate data that proves useful in decisions concerning remote areas or areas presenting unique characteristics.

Beyond the numerous missions that were carried out and the technologies that were deployed, the Ocellus initiative helped highlight certain social and organizational issues which, once understood, made it possible to accelerate the deployment of drones in the municipal sector.

The collaboration of cities and different stakeholders allowed the project to meet the different needs of municipal departments while acting in compliance with aviation regulations and establishing practices benefiting to the social acceptability of drone operations.

Progress for cities and for the entire industry

The successes achieved through the Ocellus initiative illustrate the potential of drone use by municipalities as a solution to accelerate the development of smarter and more sustainable territories. The current interest for drones in the Quebec municipal sector is largely due to the achievements of Ocellus.

The project generated many benefits for the participants and dronautics in general:

  • Sales increase in the municipal market.
  • New calls for propositions and calls for innovation for every Quebec drone operator.
  • Market opening for municipal mapping.
  • Market opening for seabed bathymetry.
  • Generation of a significant amount of data relating to the safety of drone flights.
  • Launch of the first industrial group on social acceptability by the Canadian Drone Advisory Committee organized by Transport Canada.

For cities, the Ocellus initiative has demonstrated that the use of drones in municipal settings allows, among other things:

  • To optimize city operations.
  • To manage the labor shortage.
  • To increase the safety of municipal employees.
  • To increase the safety and resilience of communities.

A strong testament of success for cities everywhere.
